Your guide picks the route through the sand bowls and along the crests, stopping on the tallest ridges so you can look across a landscape of nothing but golden waves. On a steep, soft face you swap the buggy for a sandboard and slide down, then climb back up for one more run.
Second hour, the oasis and the way back: tucked between the dunes is a small green patch of palm trees and tamarisk, where the sand meets a hidden water source. Here you switch off the engine, sit in the shade on a carpet and share a glass of sweet Moroccan mint tea, poured from high the traditional way. Refreshed, you drive back by a different route, crossing the dunes with the light low and warm, and arrive at our base in Merzouga.
