Into the dunes: we start in the morning at our office in Merzouga, when the air is still fresh and the dunes are at their most beautiful, with sharp shadows on every ridge. After the briefing you drive into Erg Chebbi, climbing and descending the golden waves of sand while your guide shows you the best lines. Then you swing north-west across the flat desert to the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji. After good rains it fills with water and, especially in winter and spring, pink flamingos and ducks gather here with the dunes reflected behind them; in the dry months it becomes a wide, cracked plain that is just as photogenic.

Lunch in Khamlia: around midday you reach Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa musicians, whose families have their roots in West Africa. Here you sit down for a real Berber pizza: a large flatbread stuffed with meat, onions, vegetables and spices, baked in a clay oven and shared hot at the table.

The black desert: after lunch the landscape changes completely as you drive onto the black hamada, a wide plain of dark stones where fossils millions of years old lie on the ground. Out here live the nomad families, in tents of woven goat and camel hair; you are welcomed with tea, see how they look after their herds and hear how life works far from any village.

Znigui desert and the oasis: next, your guide takes you to the Znigui desert, a quieter field of golden dunes away from the busy routes, where you can enjoy the sand almost alone. Your last stop is an oasis in the middle of the desert, a green corner of palm trees where you rest in the shade before the final drive back across the dunes to our office in Merzouga, arriving in the late afternoon.

No. A dune buggy drives much like a car, and your guide makes regular stops. You can also take turns driving with your passenger.

The lake is seasonal and fills after the rains. Flamingos are most often seen in winter and spring when there is water, but their presence is never guaranteed.

The Znigui desert is a quieter area of golden dunes near Merzouga, away from the busy parts of Erg Chebbi, perfect for enjoying the silence of the Sahara.

Berber pizza, also called medfouna, is a local speciality: a flatbread stuffed with meat, onions, vegetables and spices, baked in a clay oven. A vegetarian version is available on request.

Each buggy has two seats side by side: one driver and one passenger. You can take turns driving during the day.
