4 Days Hiking in Merzouga Desert: Itinerary

Check out the program below. The route and walking times can change with the weather, the season and where the nomads have set up their tents.

Day 1: Merzouga → Hike through the Dunes → Night in the Oasis

We meet in Merzouga in the morning, load the bags on the camels and start walking into Erg Chebbi. The first hours are an introduction to the dunes: learning to walk on the soft crests, stopping in the shade for tea and lunch, and climbing a high dune for the view. In the late afternoon, palm trees appear between the sand and you reach the oasis, where you spend the night by the gardens after dinner around the fire.

Day 2: Oasis → Deep into the Dunes → Wild Camp under the Stars

After breakfast you leave the oasis and walk deeper into the dunes, where there are no roads and no camps, only sand in every direction. At midday we rest in the shade for lunch and a nap. In the afternoon your guide chooses a beautiful spot between the dunes and the team sets up small tents. Dinner is cooked on the fire, and with no lights for kilometres, the night sky is simply amazing.

Day 3: Out of the Dunes → Black Desert → Night with a Nomad Family

The morning walk takes you out of the sand onto the black desert, a wide plain covered in dark stones, with acacia trees and the mountains on the horizon. It is a completely different world from the dunes. In the afternoon you reach the tent of a Berber nomad family. They welcome you with mint tea and you spend the evening with them: helping with the animals, watching the bread baked in the sand and sharing dinner on the carpets of the tent.

Day 4: Sunrise with the Nomads → Hike Back to Merzouga

Wake up with the family’s animals, have breakfast in the tent and say goodbye to your hosts. The last walk follows the edge of the dunes back to Merzouga, where you arrive around midday, tired, happy and full of memories. If you prefer, the last part can be done by 4×4.

FAQ

How fit do I need to be?

A normal fitness level is enough. Walking on sand is slower and more tiring than on a path, so we go at an easy pace with regular breaks. If you get tired, you can ride a camel for a while.

Do I carry my own bag?

No. The camels carry the bags, tents, food and water. You only carry a small day pack.

What is the wild camp like?

Small tents that the team sets up wherever we stop, with mattresses and blankets. It is simple, with no bathroom, but the setting among the dunes is unforgettable.

When is the best time for hiking in Merzouga?

From October to April, when days are pleasant for walking. In winter, nights are cold, so bring warm clothes and a sleeping bag.

How much does the 4 days hiking in Merzouga cost?
