Overview

Meet the real people of the Sahara on our half-day camel ride in Merzouga with lunch with a Berber nomad family. Your camel caravan crosses the dunes of Erg Chebbi to the edge of the desert, where nomad families still live in tents woven from goat and camel hair and move with their herds.

You are welcomed like a guest of the family: mint tea poured from high, bread baked in the hot sand, and a simple homemade lunch shared on the carpets of the tent. Your guide translates, so you can ask about their life, their animals and their traditions.

It is a genuine, human encounter, far from the tourist trail, combined with the calm of a camel trek.

Half-Day Camel Ride and Nomad Lunch: Program

Check out the program below. The nomads move with the seasons, so the tent you visit and the riding time may change a little.

Morning: Camel Trek across the Dunes → Tea at the Nomad Tent

Your camel guide meets you at your hotel in the morning, ties your turban and sets off with the caravan into Erg Chebbi. For about an hour and a half you ride across the dunes, then down to the flat, stony plain at the edge of the sand, where the nomads keep their herds. Look out for the dark tent on the horizon and the goats grazing among the acacia trees.

The family comes out to welcome you and invites you into the tent. Sitting on the carpets, you share mint tea and watch how they live: the hand-woven walls, the kitchen corner, the water carried from the well. If you like, the women may show you how they bake bread in the hot sand.

Midday: Lunch with the Family → Camel Ride Back to Merzouga

Lunch is simple and homemade, usually a tagine or a dish of the day with fresh bread, shared from the same plate as the family does. Take your time to ask questions with the help of your guide, play with the children or meet the camels. After lunch, you say goodbye and ride back across the dunes to your hotel, arriving in the afternoon.

FAQ

How long do we ride the camel?

About 1.5 hours each way, depending on where the family has set up its tent that season.

Is this a real nomad family?

Yes. They are Berber nomads who live in the desert with their animals. It is not a show, so every visit is a little different.

What do we eat for lunch?

A simple homemade meal, usually a tagine or the dish of the day, with bread and mint tea. Tell us if you have any dietary needs.

Can we do it in the afternoon instead?

Yes, we can adapt the time, but lunch is the best moment to share a meal with the family. In summer we recommend an early start.

How much does the half-day camel ride with nomad lunch cost?

The price depends on the number of people. Send us a message on WhatsApp at +212 620 628 083 with your group size and date to receive your price.
