Across the hamada to the nomads: after the briefing at our office, you drive away from the dunes and out onto the stony hamada, where the ground turns dark and the horizon opens wide. Here, far from the villages, a nomad family lives in a tent woven from goat and camel hair, keeping their goats and camels as their ancestors did. You step inside, sit on the rugs and learn how they find water, move with the seasons and bake bread in the sand. From there a sandy track leads you to a green palm oasis, where irrigation channels feed small gardens of palms and vegetables, a surprising splash of green in the desert.
Big dunes and the old village: next comes the fun part: you enter the big dunes of Erg Chebbi and drive the high ridges, with the buggy climbing and dropping over the golden sand. Then you head to an old French-era village, where crumbling stone houses and empty streets tell the story of the colonial period and the mines of the region. To finish, your guide stops on a quiet dune, the engines go silent and you simply enjoy the peace and the size of the Sahara before driving back to our office in Merzouga.
