Why Ride a Camel at Sunset?
Sunset is the most magical moment to discover the dunes by camel:
- The best light: the low sun sculpts the dunes with long shadows and warm colours.
- Cooler air: the heat of the day is gone, making the ride comfortable even in summer.
- The traditional way: the slow, gentle rhythm of the camel is the authentic way to cross the desert.
- Easy for everyone: no experience needed, perfect for families, couples and photographers.
Sunset Camel Ride in Merzouga: Program
Check out the program below to see what the ride includes. The start time changes with the seasons, following the sunset.
Late Afternoon: Camel Caravan → Sunset on a High Dune → Return at Dusk
Into the dunes: about two hours before sunset, your camel guide meets you at your hotel at the edge of the dunes, where the camels are resting on the sand. He helps you tie a desert turban against the sun and the wind, shows you how to get on as the camel stands up, back legs first, and then leads the caravan into Erg Chebbi. For about 45 minutes you sway gently over the sand, passing between tall dunes in total silence, with only the soft steps of the camels and the wind.
Sunset and the ride back: the camels kneel at the foot of a high dune, and you climb the last part on foot, barefoot in the cool sand if you like, to reach the crest. From the top, the view opens over a sea of dunes as the sun sinks and the colours change minute by minute; your guide is happy to take photos of you and the caravan. When the sun has gone, you ride back in the blue light of dusk, with the first stars appearing above Erg Chebbi, and arrive at your hotel in the early evening.
