Why Go to the Camp by Camel?
A 4×4 gets you to the camp quickly, but the camel lets you feel the desert:
- The slow rhythm of the Sahara: no engines, just the steps of the camels and the wind on the sand.
- Two magic moments in the saddle: sunset on the way in and sunrise on the way back.
- A real nomad tradition: for centuries, caravans crossed these dunes exactly like this.
- Your guide knows the dunes: our cameleers grew up in the desert around Merzouga.
Camel Ride and Night in a Desert Camp: Program
Check out the program below to see what the trip includes. Times change with the seasons, following the sunset and sunrise.
Day 1: Camel Caravan into the Dunes → Sunset → Dinner and Music at the Camp
Afternoon: about two hours before sunset we meet you in Merzouga. You leave your big luggage in a safe place, your guide helps you tie your desert turban, and the caravan sets off. Within minutes the village disappears behind the first dunes and you are surrounded only by sand. The camels walk slowly along the crests while the shadows grow longer; halfway, the caravan stops at the foot of a high dune and you climb up on foot to watch the sun go down and the dunes turn orange, then red.
Evening at the camp: you reach the camp in the soft blue light after sunset and are welcomed with mint tea. Dinner is a traditional Moroccan meal, usually soup and a tagine, followed by fruit. Then everyone gathers around the fire for Berber drums and songs. When the music stops, walk a few steps from the camp, lie on the cool sand and look at the stars: with no lights for kilometres, the Milky Way is clearly visible on most nights.
Day 2: Sunrise Camel Ride Back → Merzouga
Your guide wakes you before dawn. After a hot drink, you climb onto your camel and leave the camp while the sky is still pink. On the way back the caravan stops on a dune to watch the sun rise over the Sahara, lighting the crests of Erg Chebbi one by one. You then ride on through the fresh morning dunes to Merzouga, where you have breakfast, collect your luggage and continue your journey.
