Morocco Desert Things to Do: 15 Unforgettable Experiences in the Sahara

Morocco desert things to do: camel caravan crossing the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga

Most people imagine a trip to the Moroccan Sahara as one camel ride and one night in a tent. That is a wonderful start, but the desert has far more to offer. From racing over the dunes on a quad to sharing tea with a nomad family or hunting for fossils that are millions of years old, there are things to do in the Morocco desert for every kind of traveller.

We are a local Berber family from Merzouga, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and these are the experiences we love sharing with our guests.

1. Ride a Camel Into the Dunes at Sunset

The iconic Sahara moment. You set off in the late afternoon, swaying slowly through the dunes as the sand turns from gold to orange to deep red. Stop on a high ridge to watch the sun disappear over the plain. Try our sunset camel ride, or add dinner in the desert with the sunset camel ride and dinner.

2. Spend a Night in a Desert Camp

Sleeping in the Sahara is the experience most of our guests remember forever: a tagine dinner, mint tea, Berber drums around the fire and a silence you have probably never heard before. Choose a classic camel ride and night in a desert camp, our overnight desert camp, or a quiet oasis camp. Compare all options on our desert camps page.

3. Watch the Sunrise From the Top of a Dune

Get up before dawn, climb a big dune and watch the first light paint the Sahara pink and gold. It is worth every grain of sand in your shoes. If you are not staying in a camp, join our sunrise camel tour or see it from a 4×4 with our sunrise jeep tour.

4. Stargaze Under a Sky Full of Stars

With no light pollution and dry, clear air, the night sky over the dunes is spectacular. On a moonless night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Walk a few metres away from the camp, switch off your torch and let your eyes adjust.

5. Ride a Quad Over the Sahara

Climb, slide and race across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Our quads are automatic and easy to ride, so beginners are welcome. Choose a 1 hour quad, a 2 hour quad Sahara experience, a 3 hour quad, or go big with a full day quad excursion.

6. Drive a Buggy Through the Desert

Side by side with a friend or partner, a buggy is the most fun way to cover lots of desert. Pick a 1 hour buggy, a 2 hour buggy tour or a full day buggy excursion.

7. Go Sandboarding

Climb a steep dune, strap on a board and slide down. It is easier than it looks, more tiring than it looks, and always ends in laughter. Ask for it on our jeep tour with sunset, sandboarding and dinner.

8. Explore the Wider Desert by 4×4

A jeep takes you beyond the dunes to places most visitors never see: old mining villages, nomad camps, oases, black volcanic plains and seasonal lakes. See all our 4×4 jeep tours, including the jeep tour around Merzouga and the sunset jeep safari.

9. Go Wild Camping Deep in the Desert

For true adventurers: drive off the beaten track and sleep under the stars far from any other camp. Our private 4×4 overlanding and wild desert camping and the 2 day jeep tour with a night in the Ouzina desert take you there.

10. Go on a Multi-Day Camel Trek

Travel the way caravans did for centuries: slowly, with camels, sleeping in a different place each night. Try a full-day camel trek to a desert oasis or our 3 days camel trekking. More options on our camel trekking page.

11. Hike Through the Dunes

Walking the Sahara on foot with a local guide is one of the most peaceful ways to experience it. Join our 2 days hiking in Merzouga or the longer 4 days hiking in the Merzouga desert.

12. Share Tea With a Nomad Family

Some families still live a semi-nomadic life in the desert around Merzouga, raising goats and camels. Visiting them, with respect and with a local guide, is a unique window into Saharan life. Our half-day camel ride and lunch with a nomad family is a guest favourite.

13. Listen to Gnawa Music in Khamlia

The village of Khamlia, near Merzouga, is home to Gnawa musicians whose hypnotic rhythms of drums and metal castanets have roots in West Africa. Visiting is often included on our jeep tours around the dunes.

14. Hunt for Fossils Millions of Years Old

The region around Merzouga and Erfoud was once a sea, and the ground is full of fossils such as trilobites and ammonites. Discover them on our full-day fossil hunting jeep tour or the 2 day fossil tour with a night in a desert camp.

15. Visit a Desert Oasis

Palm groves, irrigation channels and shade in the middle of the desert: oases are the secret to life in the Sahara. Spend a day at one with our Saf Saf oasis jeep tour with lunch.
