Merzouga or Zagora: Which Desert Is Better?

It is the classic dilemma when planning a desert trip from Marrakech: Merzouga or Zagora? Both offer camel rides and nights in desert camps, but they are very different experiences. We live in Merzouga, so we are biased, but we will be honest about when Zagora makes more sense.

Merzouga is better for the dunes: the Erg Chebbi dunes are among the tallest and most beautiful in Morocco, and there are far more activities. Zagora is better if you only have 2 days from Marrakech, since it is closer, but its dunes are small.

Are the dunes in Zagora real Sahara dunes?

Yes, Zagora is at the edge of the Sahara, but its dunes are much smaller than those of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.

Is Merzouga worth the extra driving?

For most travellers, yes. Splitting the drive over two days makes it a beautiful road trip rather than a chore.

We are a Berber family from Merzouga who spent years as camel guides before founding our company. If you choose Merzouga, we will make sure it is worth every kilometre. Start with a camel ride and night in a desert camp or contact us on WhatsApp.
