Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech: The Complete Local Guide

Almost every trip to Morocco starts in Marrakech, and almost every traveller asks the same thing: how do I get from Marrakech to the Sahara? Which desert should you pick, how many days do you need, and is it worth the drive?
We are a local Berber family from Merzouga, right at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. We know the road from Marrakech well, and we know what travellers actually enjoy. This guide gives you honest answers so you can plan your Morocco desert trip from Marrakech with confidence.
Quick Answer: Which Desert Can You Visit from Marrakech?
There are three main options, and they are very different from each other:
| Agafay | Zagora | Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type of desert | Stony desert, no sand dunes | Small sand dunes | Tall golden sand dunes, up to about 150 m |
| Time from Marrakech | About 1 hour | About 6 to 7 hours | About 9 to 10 hours |
| Minimum trip | Half a day or an evening | 2 days | 3 days (2 nights is better) |
| Best for | A quick sunset dinner | Short trips with little time | The classic Sahara you see in photos |
If you want real Sahara dunes, the answer is Merzouga. Agafay is nice for an evening, but it is not the Sahara of the postcards. Read more in our honest guide: Is Merzouga Desert Worth It?
How to Get from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert
Merzouga is around 560 km from Marrakech. The drive takes a full day, usually 9 to 10 hours with stops. You have four realistic options:
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Organised tour | Minibus or 4×4 with a driver and stops included, camp and meals arranged | Most travellers, no stress |
| Private driver | Your own vehicle and schedule, flexible stops | Couples, families, small groups |
| Self-drive | Rent a car and drive via Tizi n’Tichka, Ouarzazate and Tinghir | Experienced drivers with time |
| Fly + transfer | Fly to Errachidia, then about 2 hours by road to Merzouga | Short on time |
Our tip: do not try to make the whole journey in one go if you can avoid it. Splitting it over two days is far more relaxing and lets you see the best parts of the route.
The Road: What You See Between Marrakech and the Sahara
- Tizi n’Tichka pass: the High Atlas crossing, with mountain views and Berber villages
- Ait Benhaddou: the famous fortified village and film location
- Ouarzazate: the gateway to the south and its film studios
- Dades Valley and Todra Gorge: dramatic canyons and palm groves
- Merzouga: the end of the road, where the dunes of Erg Chebbi begin
The journey is part of the experience, not just the price of getting to the desert.
Best Morocco Desert Itineraries from Marrakech
2 Days: The Fast Version
Possible, but rushed. You spend most of the time in the vehicle. If you only have two days, consider Zagora or Agafay instead, or fly to Errachidia.
3 Days: The Classic Merzouga Trip
This is the most popular choice. Day 1 you drive to the Dades Valley or Todra Gorge. Day 2 you reach Merzouga, ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp. Day 3 you watch the sunrise and drive back. It is a good compromise if you have limited time.
4 Days or More: The Relaxed Version
With 4 days you can add a second night in the desert, a 4×4 tour, a quad or buggy ride and time with a nomad family. This is the pace we recommend most. See our 2 nights in Merzouga desert experience.
What to Do in the Merzouga Desert
Once you arrive, you can choose the experiences that suit your mood and energy:
- Camel ride and night in a desert camp: the classic sunset, dinner, music and stars
- Sunrise camel ride: quiet, cool light and fewer people
- Quad bike and buggy adventures: fast and fun in the dunes
- 4×4 jeep tours: nomad families, oases and the wider desert
- Guided desert hiking for those who prefer to walk

Best Time to Visit the Desert from Marrakech

| Autumn (Sep to Nov) | Warm and pleasant | Cool | Excellent |

October to April is usually the best period. Winter nights can drop close to freezing, but camps provide heavy blankets.
What to Pack for the Sahara
- Light, loose clothes for the day and warm layers for the night
- A scarf or shesh to protect from sun and sand
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat
- Closed shoes for walking in the dunes
- A small bag with the essentials for the night in camp, as large luggage often stays in the vehicle
- A power bank and a camera
How to Choose a Good Desert Tour from Marrakech
- Check what is included: transport, camel ride, camp, dinner, breakfast and guide
