Things to Do in Erg Chebbi: 12 Best Activities in the Merzouga Dunes
What is there to do in Erg Chebbi? Erg Chebbi is the largest sea of sand dunes in Morocco, and it is much more than a place to look at the sunset. From the village of Merzouga you can ride a camel into the dunes, sleep in a desert camp, drive a 4×4, quad or buggy, go sandboarding, listen to Gnawa music, hunt for fossils, visit a nomad family and watch one of the clearest night skies in North Africa. This guide covers the 12 best activities, with realistic durations and tips from our local team.
Whether you have two hours or three days, you can build a trip that fits your budget, your energy and the season. See our full list of camel trekking, 4×4 trips, quad experiences, buggy adventures and desert camps.
About Erg Chebbi in a few lines
Erg Chebbi is a dune field in the far east of Morocco, close to the Algerian border. The dunes stretch about 22 km from north to south and around 5 km across, and the highest ones rise to roughly 150 metres. The sand changes colour through the day: pale gold at noon, orange and red at sunset. Merzouga is the main village at the foot of the dunes, and Khamlia, Hassi Labied and Rissani are close by.
1. Camel ride in the dunes
A camel ride is the classic Erg Chebbi experience, and the most peaceful way to enter the dunes. You walk at the animal’s pace with a local guide, see the dunes up close and stop to climb a big one on foot. A short ride takes about an hour, while a ride to a camp usually takes 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
- Camel ride in Merzouga, any time of day
- Sunset camel ride, for the best light
- Sunrise camel ride, for cool air and empty dunes
2. Spend a night in a desert camp
If you only do one thing, sleep in the dunes. A night in a desert camp gives you the sunset, a Moroccan dinner, a fire with Berber drums, a sky full of stars and a sunrise on the dunes the next morning. Camps range from simple Berber tents to comfortable tents with beds and private bathrooms. Read our guide to the 1 night in the Merzouga desert tour, or choose a longer stay with 2 nights in the Merzouga desert.
3. Jeep 4×4 tour around the dunes
A 4×4 is the best way to see a lot in a short time. You can reach nomad families, oases, dry lakes and the black desert, which camels cannot reach in one day. A half-day tour takes about 4 hours, and a full day can include lunch with nomads. Our 4×4 trips include sunrise, sunset, night in camp and multi-day options. For a first visit, the Merzouga sunset jeep tour is an easy choice.
4. Quad biking
Quad biking is the most fun way to move through the sand, even if you have never driven one. A guide leads the group, and you learn the controls in a few minutes. A 1-hour ride gives you the dunes and a viewpoint, a 2-hour ride goes deeper, and a full day adds more terrain. Browse the options on our quad experience page, or start with the popular 2-hour quad in Merzouga.
5. Buggy adventure
A dune buggy is a good choice for families, couples or groups who want to drive together, as it seats two and is easier to ride than a quad. You follow a guide across the dunes, with stops for photos and sandboarding. See the buggy adventures page, or the 2-hour buggy tour in Merzouga.
6. Sandboarding
Sandboarding on the big dunes is easy to learn and works for all ages. You climb a dune on foot, then slide down on a board. It is often included with sunset 4×4 tours and with camp visits, so ask when you book.
7. Watch the sunrise and sunset
Both are special. Sunset is the busiest moment, with the sand turning orange and red. Sunrise is quieter and cooler, with long shadows and golden light across the dunes. If you sleep in a camp, you get both with no extra transport.
8. Stargazing
Erg Chebbi is far from big cities, so on a clear night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. The best nights are around the new moon. Dress warmly, because desert nights can be cold, especially from November to March.
9. Visit nomad families and try Berber hospitality
Some nomad families still live around the dunes. A visit usually includes mint tea, bread and a look at how they live. It is best done as part of a 4×4 tour, with a guide who knows the family. Please be respectful when taking photos, and ask before photographing people.
10. Listen to Gnawa music in Khamlia
Khamlia is a village near Merzouga known for its Gnawa and Sahrawi music. Musicians descended from sub-Saharan Africa play drums and metal castanets in a traditional style. It is a good stop on a 4×4 day, and many camps also offer drumming around the fire in the evening.
11. Fossil hunting and the black desert
The area around Merzouga is rich in marine fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. A guided tour takes you to the fossil sites and the dark, rocky desert around the dunes. See the fossil hunting jeep tour, and the Saf Saf oasis jeep tour for a green contrast with the dunes.
12. Hiking across the dunes
If you like walking, hiking is the best way to feel the scale of the desert. You can do a short hike on the dunes, or a multi-day trek with a camel carrying the luggage. Check out our 2 days hiking in Merzouga and 4 days hiking in Merzouga tours.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Erg Chebbi?
One night is enough to see the dunes, but two nights give you time for a camel ride, a 4×4 day and more relaxed time in camp.
Is Erg Chebbi worth visiting?
Yes. It is the most accessible part of the Sahara in Morocco, with big dunes, easy activities and good camps.
Can you visit Erg Chebbi without a tour?
You can reach Merzouga by car, but to enter the dunes and reach a camp you need a guide, a camel or a 4×4, because the sand is soft and it is easy to get lost.
What is the difference between Erg Chebbi and Merzouga?
Erg Chebbi is the dune field, and Merzouga is the village at its edge. People often use the two names for the same area.
