Things to Do in Merzouga: Activities in the Dunes and Beyond
What is there to do in Merzouga? Merzouga is a small village at the edge of the Sahara, but there is plenty to do around it. In the dunes you can ride a camel, drive a quad or buggy, sandboard and sleep in a desert camp. Beyond the dunes you can visit the market town of Rissani, hear Gnawa music in Khamlia, see seasonal desert lakes, hunt for fossils and meet nomad families. This guide covers the best Merzouga activities and shows how to combine them in one, two or three days.
If you only want the dune activities, read our guide to the best things to do in Erg Chebbi. This article is wider and also covers the villages and sights around Merzouga.
Merzouga at a glance
Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the largest sand dune field in Morocco, close to the Algerian border. It is about 560 km from Marrakech and roughly 70 to 80 km from Errachidia, the nearest airport. The village has guesthouses, restaurants and tour offices, and most excursions leave from here. Nearby are Khamlia, Hassi Labied, Rissani and Erfoud.
Activities in the dunes
Camel ride
The classic. A guided camel ride in Merzouga takes you into the dunes at a slow, peaceful pace. Try the sunset camel ride or the sunrise camel ride.
Night in a desert camp
Sleep in the dunes, eat dinner under the stars and wake up to the sunrise. See the 1 night in the Merzouga desert tour or browse all desert camps.
Quad and buggy
For speed and fun, choose a quad or a buggy. Rides last from one hour to a full day.
Sandboarding
Climb a big dune and slide down on a board. It is easy to learn, and is often included with sunset tours and camp visits.
Stargazing
Far from city lights, the night sky above Merzouga is very clear, and on a moonless night you can see the Milky Way.
Activities around Merzouga
Khamlia and Gnawa music
Khamlia is a small village a few kilometres from Merzouga, known for its Gnawa and Sahrawi music. You can listen to local musicians play drums and metal castanets in a traditional style. It is an easy stop on a half-day 4×4 tour.
Rissani and its market
Rissani is the main market town of the area and has a lively traditional souk. It is also linked to the history of the Alaouite dynasty and has the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Market days are usually Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, but it is wise to check locally before you go.
Desert lakes and birdlife
After rain, shallow seasonal lakes such as Dayet Srji and Hassi Labied can appear near the dunes and attract birds, sometimes including flamingos. They are not there every year, so ask your guide what is possible on your dates.
Fossils and the black desert
The region is famous for marine fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. On a guided tour you can visit fossil sites and the dark, rocky desert around the dunes. See the fossil hunting jeep tour, and the Saf Saf oasis jeep tour for a green contrast.
Meet a nomad family
Some nomad families still live in the desert. A visit usually includes mint tea and bread, and shows how people live in this landscape. It is best done as part of a 4×4 tour, with a guide who knows the family.
Hiking
For a slower trip, walk the dunes. We offer 2 days hiking in Merzouga and 4 days hiking in Merzouga.
