You can see the full program, included services and photos on the page for our 3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.
Day 1: Marrakech to the Dadès Valley
The day starts early with a pick-up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. The road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,200 metres. The views are wide and you stop several times for photos.
After the pass you reach Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village of red-earth houses listed by UNESCO and used as a set in many films. You walk through it with your guide and have time for lunch. In the afternoon you continue past Ouarzazate and the palm groves of Skoura toward the Dadès Valley, where you have dinner and sleep in a hotel or riad.
The drive on this day is long, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving spread over the day, but the stops make it comfortable.
Day 2: Todra Gorge, Merzouga and a night in the desert camp
After breakfast you visit the Todra Gorge, where rock walls rise up to 300 metres on both sides of a narrow river valley. It is a good place to stretch your legs and take photos before the final stretch to the desert.
You then drive through the oases and villages of the south to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you meet your camel and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The camels walk slowly and your guide leads them, so no experience is needed. You watch the sunset from a high dune, and then you reach the camp.
At the camp you are welcomed with mint tea, then you have a traditional dinner, Berber drums around the fire and a sky full of stars. You sleep in a tent. Read more about this kind of night in our guide to desert camps in Merzouga or see the 1 night in the Merzouga desert tour.

Day 3: Sunrise in the dunes and the return to Marrakech
You wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast at the camp and ride back to Merzouga. After a short rest and a shower, you start the return drive through the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and the Tizi n’Tichka pass. There are stops for lunch and photos, and you arrive in Marrakech in the evening.
Because day 3 is a long drive, do not book a flight or a train on the same night. Plan to be back in Marrakech late, and keep the next morning free.
3 days or 4 days from Marrakech?
The main difference is time on the road. With 3 days you drive about 8 hours on day 1 and about 10 hours on day 3. With 4 days, the drive is split across more stops, you have a night in a hotel on the way back and you can enjoy the Draa Valley. If you can spare an extra day, the 4 day Marrakech desert tour is more relaxed. If you cannot, the 3 day version still gives you the essentials.
| Option | 3 days | 4 days |
|---|---|---|
| Nights | 1 hotel + 1 desert camp | 2 hotels + 1 desert camp |
| Pace | Fast, long drives | Relaxed, more stops |
| Best for | Short trips and tight schedules | First-time visitors who want to enjoy the road |

Best time for a Marrakech to Merzouga tour
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer is very hot in the desert, often above 40 degrees at midday, although evenings are pleasant. Winter days are mild, but the nights are cold and the High Atlas can have snow, which sometimes affects the pass. For the Sahara, October to April is the best period.
