One or two nights is ideal. One full day lets you see the medina, the sea walls and the port. A second day gives you time for the beach, a hammam or a trip to Sidi Kaouki, and lets you enjoy sunset and the calm evening atmosphere after the day-trippers leave. A day trip from Marrakech is possible, but you will spend about six hours on the road.

Essaouira has a mild climate all year thanks to the ocean. For sightseeing, April to June and September to October are the most pleasant. Summer is a great escape from the heat of Marrakech, but it is also the windiest season, which kitesurfers love and sunbathers less so. Winter is mild during the day and cool at night, with occasional rain.

SeasonWhat to expectBest for
SpringMild, sunny, some windSightseeing, walking
SummerWarm but fresh, often very windyEscaping the heat, kitesurfing
AutumnPleasant, calmer windsEverything
WinterMild days, cool eveningsQuiet visits, surfing
  • Essaouira town beach: long and wide, right next to the medina. Perfect for walks, horse and camel rides, and kitesurfing. Often windy.
  • Diabat: just south of town, quieter, with dunes behind the beach.
  • Sidi Kaouki: about 25 km south, a wild, laid-back beach loved by surfers. Our pick for a beach day.
  • Moulay Bouzerktoun: north of town, famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers.

The Atlantic is cool and currents can be strong, so swim only where it is safe and follow local advice.

Both are visited by many travellers every year. Essaouira is smaller and calmer, with much less pressure from sellers and unofficial guides, and most visitors find it more relaxing. Normal precautions still apply: watch your belongings in busy places and avoid empty areas late at night. Women travellers may find our guide Is Morocco Female Friendly? useful.

Often slightly, yes. Fresh fish at the port and simple local restaurants are very good value, and the relaxed atmosphere means less pressure when shopping. Upmarket riads and restaurants are priced similarly to Marrakech, and prices rise during festivals and holidays. Bargaining is still normal in the souks. Yes. Alcohol is legal in Morocco and is served in licensed bars, some restaurants and hotels, and sold in a few licensed shops. Many small local cafés and restaurants do not serve it. Drinking in public streets is not acceptable, and availability can be more limited during Ramadan. Be discreet and respectful of local customs.

Yes, but it is relaxed rather than wild. Evenings are about rooftop terraces at sunset, dinner in the medina, a few bars and live music, especially Gnawa sessions. If you want big clubs, Marrakech has more. Nightlife livens up a lot during festivals.

  • In the medina: modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful and comfortable.
  • On the beach: swimwear is fine on the beach itself; cover up when you walk back into town.
  • For the wind: bring a light jacket or windbreaker, even in summer, and a scarf against blowing sand.
  • Shoes: comfortable flat shoes for the cobbled streets.

The most famous is the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, held every year since 1998, usually in June. Gnawa masters share the stage with jazz, African, gospel and world music artists, with free concerts across the town. In 2026, the 27th edition took place from 25 to 27 June. Essaouira also hosts MOGA, an electronic music festival in early autumn. If you plan to visit during a festival, book accommodation well in advance.
