Is Essaouira in Morocco Worth Visiting? An Honest Guide

Essaouira is often described as Marrakech’s laid-back seaside sister: a whitewashed medina with blue shutters, fortified sea walls, a busy fishing port and a constant Atlantic breeze. But is Essaouira worth visiting if your time in Morocco is limited? Here is our honest take, and how it fits into a trip that includes the Sahara.

Yes, especially if you want a calm break after Marrakech. Essaouira is relaxed, easy to explore on foot, full of character and much less hectic than the big medinas. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is less worth it if you have very few days and prefer to prioritise the Sahara.

  • A relaxed medina: straight, walkable streets, art galleries and craft shops with far less pressure than in Marrakech.
  • The sea walls (Skala): old cannons, crashing waves and beautiful sunsets over the Atlantic.
  • The fishing port: rows of blue boats and fresh grilled fish straight from the sea.
  • Wind sports: one of Morocco’s best spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
  • Music: Essaouira is a centre of Gnawa music and hosts a well-known festival dedicated to it.
  • A mild climate: cooler than the interior in summer, thanks to the ocean breeze.
  • The wind: great for kitesurfers, less so for sunbathing. The beach is better for walking than lying in the sun.
  • Cool water: the Atlantic is fresh even in summer.
  • Few “big sights”: Essaouira is about atmosphere rather than famous monuments.
