Can You Do a Day Trip to the Desert From Marrakech? The Honest Answer

Day trip to the desert from Marrakech: camels on the Sahara dunes of Merzouga at sunset

Short on time in Marrakech and dreaming of the Sahara? It is one of the most common questions travellers ask: can you do a day trip to the desert from Marrakech? We are a local Berber family from Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara, and we would rather give you an honest answer than sell you a trip you will regret.

Yes and no. You can visit a desert in a day from Marrakech, but not the Sahara sand dunes.

  • Agafay, about an hour from Marrakech, is a stony desert that is easy to visit in half a day, but it has no sand dunes.
  • The real Sahara dunes are on the other side of the Atlas Mountains. Zagora is around 6 to 7 hours away by road, and Merzouga’s great dunes of Erg Chebbi are about 9 to 10 hours away. That is too far for a comfortable day trip.

If seeing golden Sahara dunes is your dream, plan at least 2 days (Zagora) or ideally 3 days (Merzouga), or fly closer to the desert.

Agafay is the only desert that really works as a day trip from Marrakech. It is a landscape of rocky, sandy-coloured hills with wide views of the High Atlas, often snow-capped in winter. Typical activities include a short camel ride, quad biking and a sunset dinner in a camp.

Good for: travellers with only one free afternoon who want a taste of desert scenery.
Keep in mind: there are no sand dunes. If you picture yourself on a golden dune, Agafay will not be that experience.

Some agencies sell same-day return trips to Zagora. In practice, that means around 12 to 14 hours in a vehicle, crossing the Atlas twice, for a short time in small dunes, usually in the heat of the day and missing the sunset, the stars and the sunrise, which are the best moments in the desert. Most travellers who try it tell us they wished they had stayed the night.

2 Days: Zagora

Cross the High Atlas, stop at Ait Benhaddou, follow the Draa Valley and spend one night in a camp near Zagora’s dunes before driving back. A good compromise if you only have two days.

3 Days: Merzouga (Our Recommendation)

The classic route: Marrakech, the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, then the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Once you arrive in Merzouga, we take care of your desert experience: a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp, or a sunset jeep tour with a night in camp.

Fly to the Desert

Short on time but determined to see the big dunes? Fly to Errachidia, about 2 hours by road from Merzouga. You can spend one or two nights in the desert without the long drive. Our 2 nights in Merzouga desert is ideal for this.

Continue to Fes Instead of Returning

If your trip continues to Fes, cross the Sahara on the way: Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes. You see the desert without driving the same road twice.
