Does Merzouga Get Cold at Night? Desert Temperatures and What to Pack

It surprises almost every first-time visitor: the Sahara can be cold. So, does Merzouga get cold at night? Yes, especially from November to March. As a local family who sleep in the desert all year round, here is what to expect in each season and how to stay comfortable in your camp.

Yes. Even after a warm day, temperatures in Merzouga drop quickly after sunset. In winter, nights can fall to just a few degrees above freezing, and occasionally below. In spring and autumn, nights are cool and pleasant. In summer, nights stay warm.

SeasonTypical dayTypical nightHow it feels
Winter (Dec to Feb)15°C to 22°C2°C to 8°C, sometimes colderCold; you need a warm jacket
Spring (Mar to May)24°C to 35°C10°C to 20°CCool to mild; bring a fleece
Summer (Jun to Aug)38°C to 45°C22°C to 28°CWarm; light clothes are enough

These are rough ranges, not forecasts. Every year is a little different, so check the weather before you travel.

The air in the Sahara is very dry and the sky is usually clear. Without clouds or humidity to hold the heat, the sand loses the warmth of the day very quickly after sunset. That is why the temperature can fall by 15 degrees or more between afternoon and night.

Good camps prepare for the cold. Tents are lined, beds have thick blankets, and in winter many camps add extra blankets. The evening fire is also a cosy place to sit after dinner. With the right clothes, most guests sleep very comfortably. Read what else to expect in our Sahara desert camp guide and choose your camp on our desert camps page.
