Erg Chebbi Dunes: Complete Guide to Morocco’s Sahara Sand Sea

Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset with a camel ride near Merzouga

What is Erg Chebbi? Erg Chebbi is the largest sand dune field in Morocco, at the edge of the Sahara near the village of Merzouga. Its orange dunes rise to roughly 100 to 150 metres and stretch for about 20 kilometres from north to south. It is the place most travellers picture when they dream of a Moroccan desert trip: a camel ride at sunset, a night in a tent and a sunrise over the sand. This guide covers where it is, how to get there, what to do, when to go and how to plan your visit.

Sizes, distances and times are approximate and the weather changes things, so confirm the details with the team before you travel.

  • 3 nights or more: hiking, fossils, oases and a slow pace

If this is your first time in the Sahara, Erg Chebbi is usually the easier choice.

  • A scarf or light cotton shawl for the sun and the sand
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat
  • Warm layers for the night, especially from November to March
  • Closed shoes you can walk in on sand
  • A small bag for the camel ride, with the rest left at your hotel
  • A phone charger or power bank, as camps have limited power
  • Book ahead for spring and autumn
  • Ask what is included: dinner, breakfast, tent type, transfers and water
  • Choose a private tour if you want your own pace
  • Go on the camel ride in the afternoon for the best light
  • Respect the local culture and dress modestly in villages
  • Bring cash in dirhams, as cash machines are few

Is Erg Chebbi the same as Merzouga?

Not exactly. Erg Chebbi is the dune field. Merzouga is the nearest village and the main base for visiting it.

How tall are the Erg Chebbi dunes?

The highest dunes are roughly 100 to 150 metres, depending on the wind and the source.

Can I visit Erg Chebbi in one day?

Yes, from Merzouga you can do a sunset camel ride or a 4×4 tour in a few hours. For the full experience, we recommend one night in a camp.

Is Erg Chebbi safe?

Tours with a local guide are well organised. Follow your guide, carry water and avoid walking far into the dunes alone.

Is it suitable for children?

Camel rides, jeep tours and camp nights suit most children. Quads and buggies depend on age and size, so ask us first.

Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend it, especially from March to May and from October to November.
