Is It Safe to Drive From Marrakech to Merzouga? A Local’s Road Guide
Many travellers love the idea of a self-drive road trip to the Sahara. But is it safe to drive from Marrakech to Merzouga? We see visitors arrive by rental car every day, and here is our honest advice on the road, the risks and how to make the journey enjoyable.
Quick Answer
Yes, it is generally safe to drive from Marrakech to Merzouga if you are a confident driver, drive in daylight and take your time. The main roads are paved and in reasonable condition. The real challenges are the long distance (about 560 km), the mountain bends of the Tizi n’Tichka pass, and local driving habits.
The Route at a Glance
| Section | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka | Mountain road with many bends, climbing to about 2,260 m |
| Tizi n’Tichka → Ouarzazate | Descent, then wide plateau roads; detour to Ait Benhaddou |
| Ouarzazate → Dades → Tinghir | Good roads through valleys and palm groves |
| Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga | Flat desert roads, long straight stretches |
We recommend splitting the drive over two days, with a night in the Dades Valley or near the Todra Gorge.
The Main Risks and How to Handle Them
- Mountain bends: the Tizi n’Tichka pass is winding, with trucks and buses. Drive slowly, use your horn on blind bends and only overtake with clear visibility.
- Weather: in winter, snow or ice can close the pass for short periods. Check conditions before you leave.
- Night driving: avoid it. Roads are often unlit, and you may meet animals, cyclists or vehicles without lights.
- Speed limits and police checks: police checkpoints and speed controls are common. Respect limits, carry your licence, passport and car papers, and always stop when asked.
- Fatigue: the distance is long. Take breaks every couple of hours.
- Sand: do not drive an ordinary rental car into the dunes or onto sandy tracks; you will get stuck very quickly. Leave the car at your guesthouse and go into the dunes by camel, 4×4 or quad.
- Roadside “helpers”: near Erfoud and Rissani, people may wave you down to offer hotels or camps. Politely continue to the place you booked.
Tips for a Safe Drive
- Rent from a reputable company and check tyres, spare wheel and insurance.
- Download offline maps; signal can be weak in the mountains.
- Fill up the tank whenever you can on long stretches.
- Carry water, snacks and cash. ATMs are limited near Merzouga; see our money guide.
- Plan to arrive in Merzouga before dark.
- Save the emergency numbers: Royal Gendarmerie 177 on rural roads, ambulance 15.
