Marrakech with Kids: The Best Things to Do with Children

Marrakech with kids: family enjoying a camel ride and desert camp in Morocco

Is Marrakech good for children? Absolutely, if you plan it well. The city is colourful, lively and full of things kids remember for years: snake charmers and storytellers in the square, camels, gardens, pools and horse-drawn carriages. The trick is to mix busy medina time with calm breaks.

We are a local family from Merzouga in the Sahara, and we welcome many families on their way south. Here are our favourite ideas for Marrakech with kids. Opening hours and entry prices change, so check them before you go.

1. Jemaa el-Fna Square in the Late Afternoon

Go early evening, before it gets too crowded. Kids love the music, the orange juice stalls and the street performers. Hold hands tightly, keep a close eye on everyone and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated. Avoid photos with animals or performers unless you agree the price first.

2. Gardens and Green Spaces

Marrakech has beautiful gardens where children can run and rest, including the Majorelle Garden, the Menara Gardens and the Agdal Gardens. They are perfect for a quiet break in the middle of the day.

3. A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

A calèche ride is a relaxed way to see the city. Agree the price and route before you get in.

4. Water Park and Pool Time

In summer especially, a hotel pool or a water park is a great way to cool off. Families often keep one afternoon completely free for this.

5. Cooking Class or Tea Break

Many cooking classes are family-friendly, and children enjoy making tagine, bread or mint tea. A rooftop café is also a good place to rest.

6. A Camel Ride in the Palmeraie or Agafay

Camel rides near Marrakech are an easy first taste of the desert. For the full Sahara experience, our families love the camel ride and night in a desert camp in Merzouga.

7. A Day Trip Out of the City

The Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley offer fresh air and a break from the heat. Choose short drives and bring snacks and water.

  1. Visit in spring or autumn when the weather is mild
  2. Plan one main activity a day and keep afternoons free for rest
  3. Carry water, snacks, sunscreen and hats
  4. Use a stroller carefully, as the medina streets are uneven and narrow
  5. Choose a riad or hotel with a pool
  6. Stay hydrated and eat at busy, clean restaurants
  7. Teach children to stay close and to say no politely to sellers

If you have 4 days or more, add the Sahara. Kids love the camels, sandboarding and sleeping in a tent under the stars. See our Morocco desert tour from Marrakech guide, or try a family-friendly quad or buggy session in the dunes.
