Which City in Morocco Is Closest to the Sahara Desert?

Which city in Morocco is closest to the Sahara: the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga

Planning your route to the dunes and wondering which city in Morocco is closest to the Sahara Desert? The answer depends on which part of the Sahara you want to see. We live in Merzouga, right at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, so here is the local answer.

  • For the big dunes of Erg Chebbi: the village of Merzouga sits right at the edge of the dunes. The nearest towns are Rissani (about 35 to 40 km) and Erfoud (about 50 km). The nearest larger city, with an airport, is Errachidia, about 2 hours away.
  • For the Draa Valley dunes: Zagora is the main town, and M’Hamid El Ghizlane is the last village before Erg Chigaga.

Of the big tourist cities, Ouarzazate is the closest major city on the Sahara side of the Atlas, while Marrakech and Fes are each a long day’s drive from the dunes.

Merzouga is not a city but a small village, and that is part of its charm. Guesthouses and camps stretch along the dunes, and from many of them you can walk straight onto the sand. It is the starting point for almost every Sahara experience in this part of Morocco: camel rides with a night in a desert camp, quads, buggies and 4×4 tours.

Rissani is a lively market town with a famous weekly souk and the ruins of Sijilmasa, a great medieval caravan city. Erfoud is known for its fossils and marble workshops. Both have banks and ATMs, which are very limited in Merzouga, so they are a good place to withdraw cash. See our money guide.

Errachidia’s airport (Moulay Ali Cherif) is the fastest way to reach the dunes, usually with a connection through Casablanca. From there, it is about 2 hours by road to Merzouga.

In the southwest, Zagora is the main town of the Draa Valley, with small dunes nearby. Further south, M’Hamid El Ghizlane is the starting point for 4×4 trips to the remote Erg Chigaga. Compare all the desert areas in our guide What Is the Desert in Morocco Called?
