Does It Rain in the Merzouga Desert? Rain, Storms and Desert Weather Explained

Rain in the Sahara sounds almost impossible, but it does happen. So, does it rain in the Merzouga desert? As a family who have lived at the foot of Erg Chebbi all our lives, here is what you can expect, and why a rare rainy day can actually be one of the most magical things you will ever see in the desert.

Yes, but very rarely. Merzouga is one of the driest places in Morocco, with only a small amount of rain in a typical year and many months with none at all. When it does rain, it is usually a short shower or, occasionally, a sudden storm. The chance of rain spoiling your trip is very low.

SeasonChance of rainWhat to expect
Winter (Dec to Feb)LowOccasional light showers; clear, cold nights
Spring (Mar to May)LowRare showers; some windy days
Summer (Jun to Aug)Very lowHot and dry; rare short storms
Autumn (Sep to Nov)Low, but storms possibleMost of the rare heavy storms happen around this time

Weather varies a lot from one year to the next. Some years see almost no rain; occasionally, a single storm brings a large amount of water in a few hours.

  • The dunes change colour: wet sand turns a deep orange-red, and the air smells fresh and earthy.
  • Seasonal lakes can appear: after heavy rain, the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji, near Merzouga, can fill up and attract birds such as flamingos. In recent years, unusually heavy storms have even left pools of water among the dunes, an extraordinary sight.
  • The desert blooms: small plants and flowers can appear in the days after rain.
  • Dry riverbeds can flood: oueds (dry valleys) can fill quickly. Never try to cross a flooded track, and follow local advice.

Wind is more common than rain in Merzouga, especially in spring. On windy days, sand blows across the dunes and visibility can drop. Good guides adapt the timing of camel rides and tours, and camps are set in sheltered spots between the dunes. Bring a scarf (shesh) and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes.

Very rarely. If a storm is forecast, we adjust the timing of your camel ride or jeep tour, and camps are prepared for bad weather. Safety always comes first: after very heavy rain, some tracks may be closed for a short time. Read our Merzouga safety guide.

  • A light waterproof jacket in autumn and winter, just in case.
  • A scarf and sunglasses for wind and sand.
  • Warm layers for cold nights; read Does Merzouga get cold at night?

What is the rainiest month in Merzouga?

There is no truly rainy month. The rare heavier storms tend to happen in late summer and autumn, but they are unpredictable.

Can a desert camp flood?

Well-run camps are placed on safe ground between the dunes, away from dry riverbeds. If a big storm is expected, staff take precautions.

When is the driest time to visit?

Summer is the driest, but also the hottest. October to April gives the best balance of comfortable temperatures and little rain.
