How Far Is the Sahara Desert from Casablanca? Distance, Time and Best Routes

How far is the Sahara Desert from Casablanca: Merzouga dunes and desert camp

How far is the Sahara Desert from Casablanca? The big golden dunes of Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) are roughly 750 to 800 km from Casablanca by road, and the drive usually takes around 10 to 12 hours without long stops. The Zagora and Mhamid area, where the first Sahara dunes begin, is a little closer at roughly 600 to 650 km, or about 8 to 9 hours. There is no train or direct public transport to the dunes, so most travellers combine the trip with a stop in Marrakech or Fes and join a 3-day or 4-day desert tour.

Distances and times are approximate and change with traffic, weather, road works and your stops, so use them for planning and confirm locally before you travel.

Route 1: Casablanca to Marrakech to Merzouga

Travel from Casablanca to Marrakech first, by train, bus or car, then join a desert tour over the High Atlas. This route passes Tizi n’Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. It is the most popular option and the most scenic. See our guides to Marrakech to Merzouga and the Marrakech desert tour of 4 days.

Route 2: Casablanca to Fes to Merzouga

Go north-east to Fes, then cross the Middle Atlas through Ifrane, the cedar forests and Midelt before reaching the Ziz Valley and Merzouga. This route is good if you want to see Fes, and many tours run Fes to Merzouga over 2 or 3 days. Fes to Merzouga is roughly 450 to 500 km.

Driving to Merzouga in one day is possible only as a very long, tiring trip, and you would see little on the way. We do not recommend it. Breaking the trip with a night in Marrakech, Fes or on the road gives you a safer, more enjoyable journey and arrival in time for sunset on the dunes.

  • Zagora and Mhamid: a shorter option with quieter camps and smaller dunes.
  • Agafay Desert: a rocky desert near Marrakech, good for a short evening but not the true Sahara.
